'Wheel of the Year' original linocut
'Wheel of the Year' is an original linocut print, celebrating the Pagan / Wiccan calendar. Design size 7” x 7” approx, on A4 paper.
The Wheel of the Year celebrates the cyclic movement of the seasons throughout the year. The wheel is made up of the year's 4 main solar events - the solstices, Yule & Litha, and the equinoxes, Ostara & Mabon - and 4 seasonal festivals at the midpoints between these (Imbolc, Beltane, Lammas and Samhain).
While the solar events are connected with the Earth's journey around the Sun throughout the year, the seasonal festivals are connected with the changing seasons and notable points in nature and agriculture. For instance, Imbolc (which can be thought of as the birth of Spring) often coincides with the first sightings of snowdrops. Lammas can be considered a harvest festival, coinciding with the harvesting of the corn and cereal crops.
Many of our modern celebrations have their roots in these ancient festivals:
Yule -> Christmas
Ostara -> Easter
Beltane -> May Day
Samhain -> Halloween
Open edition, signed by me as the artist.
Printed using Cranfield black ink, on cream Japanese Simili paper.
This is an original design, hand-drawn onto a lino block which is then carved ready for printing. The plate is then inked up and each print is hand-pulled. Due to the nature of the crafting & printing process, each print will be slightly different, with small variations in tone and colour.
Unframed / umounted - each print will be shipped flat (not rolled), carefully wrapped in acid-free tissue with a backboard (no plastic).
